Close-ups usually distinguish main characters. Major characters are normally given a close-up when they are introduced, it as a way of indicating how important they are in the movie.
Close-up shots do not show the subject in the broad context of its surroundings. If overused, they may leave viewers uncertain as to what they are seeing.

Editing Techniques and Terminology
Tilting Kyle Todd
This is when the camera changes angle on its y axis (up and down). This technique can be used to make the subject look innocent or vulnerable through a high angle shot, or menacing and strong through a low angle shot.
This concept keeps reappearing in the film. First when Salim sells Jamal’s signature of the actor that visited the slums. Then, again at the end of the film, when Salim sacrifices for himself for Latika so she can escape and find Jamal. This is the contrast between the two meanings of the phrase. Where in most of the film Salim picks money over love and Jamal picks love over money.

Dissolve Declan Morkel
A post-production film technique it is basically the gradual transition of one frame/image into another frame or image where on fades out and the other fades in with the two shots overlapping for a period with the length of time giving the effect its relative power. This could have been used in the movie to show the change from one scene into another showing a time differential but making this a more natural rather than abrupt occurrence.
