Innocence Lost Declan Morkel
This thread begins with Jamal and Salim’s mothers death, leaving the bereft of maternal care, lone islands in a sea of change. This event robs them of their childhood innocence.
Another example is that of Salim killing his former owner Mamam in cold blood, this event makes Salim guilty of murder, and he can never be an innocent or be innocent again
This theme occurs in many other events throughout the film, Salim leaves Latika behind as the Three Musketeers attempt to escape from Mamamm, the police judge Jamal as guilty immediately and it seems he must prove his innocence rather than the traditional proving of guilt, Latika is taken advantage of by Salim and then by the criminal he gives her to, Salim and Jamal steal and con for a living for years as the grow up on trains and in the Taj Mahal.
This theme has the twin aspects of innocence lost before the law and that of humane innocence lost, how the break laws to survive and how they do things, are dealt blows that rot the soul.
The theme runs through also by age, and as they age innocence is lost via simple age and by all they’ve been though. This is all portrayed as their growth occurs and how they grow up in one of the world’s harshest environments for children. The slums of India, only Jamals idealism seems to survive through the movie but for the one time youth Salim, who played cricket and explored the slums grows into a cold hearted killer and Latika who becomes a slave and jades. Only Jamals innocence really survives and because of this he saves Latika and then lets Salim redeem himself . The movie then is not only of innocence lost but of finding it again

For love or money Josh Hakkinen
This concept keeps reappearing in the film. First when Salim sells Jamal’s signature of the actor that visited the slums. Then, again at the end of the film, when Salim sacrifices for himself for Latika so she can escape and find Jamal. This is the contrast between the two meanings of the phrase. Where in most of the film Salim picks money over love and Jamal picks love over money.

A Tale of Two Brothers Michael Groom
It is a story of loyalty and betrayel, of love and hatred. A bond between Jamal and Salim, two brothers living in the slums of India.
Life seemed alright for the two brothers, until there mother was killed in a Muslim raid. Jamal and Salim had to flee for their lives.
Salim’s first real test of loyalty, was when he was ask to bring in Jamal so that he could be blinded by a gang of criminals. Salim, in an act of loyalty, warned his brother, and the two brothers narrowly escaped Maman and his goons. But during the escape, Salim left Jamal’s love of his life, Latika behind. In an act of loyalty, Salim was unloyal to Jamal by leaving Latika behind.
Jamal and Salim go back and rescue Latika. But Salim, after rescuing Latika, got very drunk and took advantage of Latika, despite Jamal loving Latika. Jamal tried to stop Salim, which almost ended with Salim putting a bullet into Jamal’s head. This was one of the few times that there was any disloyalty between these two brothers. After this, the brothers went their separate ways.
Many years later, the brothers get reunited, but there is still a tension between them. Jamal hadn’t forgiven Salim for taking advantage of Latika. And things don’t seem to be getting better. Especially when Salim kidnaps Latika while she was attempting to run away with Jamal.
Salim imprisons Latika. But surprisingly, Salim had a change of heart, and he helps Latika escape, during which he sacrificed his own life to help her escape.
In the end, through all the betrayel, Salim shows that he still loves his brother, and that he is willing to die so his brother can be happy. Salim showed that he was still loyal to his brother Jamal.

Fate or Coincidence Kyle Todd
This is a theme that is ever present throughout the movie Slumdog Millionaire. From the beginning of the movie, as we see Jamal Malik explain to the police investigator how he could answer the questions, we first think that the early reasons to his answer could just be coincidence, the reasons themselves easily logical. Then as the movie progresses we see each of these ‘coincidences’ add up to the point where it simply doesn’t seem logical for it to be coincidence that is when the ‘fate’ part is displayed. These are the examples that fit with the theme ‘Fate or
Coincidence’:
Question 1: He knew that Amitabh Bachchan was the star of the film because he jumped into a pool of faeces to get his autograph.
Question 3: Jamal is asked what is God Rama holding in his right hand. He knows the answer because as a child he saw a child dressed like this god.
Question 4: He knew that “Surdas” wrote the poem “Darshan Do Ghanshyam”, because he was asked to sing it while at Maman’s “orphanage”
Question 5: He remembers whose portrait is on the $100 bill because he was given one by an American family and he gave it to his blinded friend Arvind.
In questions 2, 8 and 9 Jamal guesses the answers correctly with the help of a lifeline.
Other examples outside of the show are how he found Latika every time she disappeared and how everything planned out for him to get onto the show.
After all these coincidences it is hard not to believe that fate has played a part in all this
