Character Profiles on on our Feature Movie: Slumdog Millionaire
Jamal Kyle Todd
We were privileged enough to to have Jamal in our editing office this week and took the chance to ask him some questions about his life story. So Jamal, have you always believed that you and Latika would be together? I believe that we were meant to be together, because we have been separated too many times to count but we have always been reunited. This is why I say that it must be fates hand that has brought us together. What were your thoughts while you were under police custody for allegedly cheating? My concern was that I would not be able to go back on the show. That was my main thought because I went on the show, not to win money, but in the hopes that Latika would be watching and would see me. You had a varying relationship with your brother Salim, at what point do you think it started to turn sour? As children we were close, but then it was my mother, Salim and I but after my mothers death was when our bond was tested to the limit. I saw another aide of Salim. The side that hungered for money and power. That day in the hotel when he locked me out was when the bond was severed. I hated him wholly. But i forgive him now. He let Latika go, even at the expense of his own life. And have you fulfilled your promise to Latika that you would one day live in Hill Road? Yes, if have made good on that promise. We live in a two story house that over looks a beautiful garden with a pool. I couldn't be happier. |
Salim Josh Hakkinen
Salim is a very different character to Jamal, his brother. He starts off as playing a prank on Jamal, as he locked Salim in the toilet so he couldn't see the movie star that came to the slums. Then let’s go of Latika's hand while they were escaping on the train. The time when they found Latika again and Salim took Latika away in the room and pointed the gun at him and told him to go. After that Jamal would never forgive him and no longer had respect for his older brother. After the fall out between the brothers, he started to work for Maman the gangster. He had to kill people, Maman made him rich. Salim liked the money, maybe his upbringing in the slums and had the emotions and personality. Salim personality is a quick thinker, doesn't keep anything close to his heart, deals with situations quickly and likes to give orders not to take them but... At the end of the movie Salim has a change of character and lets Latika escape from Maman, with his phone and car. He also dies so that he could destroy the money and so Latika could escape. |
Latika Michael Groom
History:
Latika is Jamal's love of his life. She grew up with Jamal and Salim in the slums of India. Many years later, she becomes the concubine of a terrifying crime lord. Jamal finds her, and begs her to flee with him. She loves Jamal, but is terrified that her "husband" will kill them both if they try and escape together. Eventually she realizes that it is worth the risk and runs away with him, despite the risks that were taken.
Characteristics:
She is humble and quite girl. She is also extremely shy, an example is when she was standing in the rain. She didnt try and ask the boys if she could come in under the shelter.
She is also a caring and warm-hearted person. An example is when she looks after a baby, when Salim was going to drop him onto the ground. This scene showed that Latika was a very kind girl, that she is warm hearted.
She is also very intellectual. This is clearly shown to everyone when she plays a trick on Salim when he is sleeping.
She is also easily intimidated, she doesnt often voice her opinion because of the earlier statement. This is shown when Jamal begs her to run away with him. She is very reluctant, and stops talking all together when she sees her “husband.” She was afriad of him.

Prem Kumar Declan Morkel
We saw him in the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” and he is the epitome of the perfect game show host in the beginning but in this character profile we at IMF will be breaking down his role in the movie. His cool façade began very smoothly but throughout his encounter with Jamal Malik his false armour began to break and the real Prem Kumar is revealed.
Prem Kumar kicks off as a gentlemanly host, high class at first glance but later on we find his roots in the same slum Jamal grew from and he fought very hard not to have his tree shaded by Jamal.
He masterfully manipulates the crowd, playing their emotions like a master conductor, effortlessly with poise and grace, but his viscously vindictive attitude towards Jamal and the way Jamal grew as a character, found his feet and became more in control throughout the movies duration. Kumar opened the door to this with his constant snide remarks, belittling Jamal it seemed but to the viewer he diminishes and darkens himself.
His tirade after Jamal correctly answered the question after Kumar deliberately gave him misinformation showed how he has a territorial attitude towards his show and how much he saw Jamal as a threat to his image. He is so threatened by this ‘slumdog’ he has him arrested through sheer conjecture and his disbelief at Jamal winning the show is evident but throughout his self-control is also obvious even though he may have been an ego maniac, the Prem Kumar we saw was no idiot and tried carefully and wittingly as the movies antagonist to bring down our hero, Jamal. That is the real Prem Kumar
